Erroneously sending an email using either Cc (carbon copy) or To, rather than Bcc (blind carbon copy), is one of the most common types of data breach. Such a simple mistake could cost your organisation thousands in fines, but can be avoided if staff are sufficiently trained.
This 10-minute course is designed to educate employees on the risks when using email, and when to use the Cc and Bcc fields. An assessment at the end of the course will test their learning. The course is recommended for all employees who use email for work-related tasks.

Data breaches caused by human error are becoming a common occurrence – and consistently, the specific cause identified is a lack of appropriate staff training.
Incidents in which data is sent to an incorrect recipient or where recipients are added to the incorrect field are preventable. Employee errors such as these pose a significant threat to data security within organisations and show that incidents do not just occur with malicious intent; they can also happen accidentally.
The ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) issued a fine of £200,000 to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse for incorrectly sending a bulk email to 90 recipients rather than blind copying them in. A key reason for the fine was the lack of knowledge and training of staff relating to sending bulk emails. Under the EU GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), preventable data breaches can incur significant fines (€20 million or 4% of annual global turnover - whichever is greater) and reputational damage.
To combat and prevent these occurrences, we have developed this human patch e-learning course to help employees who handle and communicate sensitive data do so securely and legally.
This course aims to explain the difference between Cc (carbon copy) and Bcc (blind carbon copy), and highlights the importance of using the correct option. It also explains how to send personal information via email in accordance with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and DPA (Data Protection Act 2018), and the consequences of data breaches.
This non-technical course is suitable for all employees who need to be aware of the risks and consequences that come with misusing email. It will help them better understand how to communicate securely and legally via email. The course is suitable for organisations of all sizes and in all sectors.
