Infographic: What is crypto-ransomware and how can I protect my business?

A global cyber attack has been underway since Friday, affecting more than 200,000 organisations in 150 countries. In the UK, the malware hit more than 60 NHS trusts, leading to operations being cancelled and patients turned away from A&E.

The attack in brief

The WannaCry/WannaCrypt/WanaCrypt0r 2.0/WannaDecryptor ransomware exploited a flaw in Microsoft’s SMB software that had been discovered by the National Security Agency and leaked by hackers allegedly associated with the North Korean Lazarus Group hacking institution. It spread rapidly across networks, locking away files until a security expert managed to stop the attack by triggering a ‘kill switch’ on Saturday. The attack affected organisations including the UK’s National Health Service, Telefónica in Spain, and Nissan’s Sunderland plant among many others.
