Taking effect across the EU on 25 May 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will supersede the 28 current national data protection laws based on the 1995 Data Protection Directive (DPD), bringing a uniform approach to data protection throughout the EU. Beyond reinforcing the data protection rights of individuals and simplifying the free flow of personal data in the EU, the new regulation will also make penalties for non-compliance tougher – up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20 million, whichever is greater.
To comply with the new data protection law, organisations are adding skilled figures to their workforce or enrolling their data protection officers and managers on professional training courses to ensure they have staff with a solid understanding of the implications and legal requirements of the Regulation.
Is it enough?
No, it isn’t: all staff members, including non-technical personnel, should be made aware of the changes to their daily jobs brought by the new regulation – its principles, roles, responsibilities and processes.
