Top five ITIL-busting myths

Although ITIL® is one of the most authoritative and well-known frameworks within the ITSM industry, many myths about it still persist.

Below, we bust the top five ITIL myths:

  Myth Fact
1 Suitable for large organizations only ITIL is a framework (not something that needs to be followed exactly), it therefore provides the flexibility needed for every business’ requirements
2 Bureaucratic As many people as possible should take part in adopting ITIL to avoid allocating multiple roles to one person.
3 Time consuming As you are only concentrating on a smaller subset of processes when adopting ITIL, it is less intensive than dealing with an entire organization.
4 Non-agile ‘Adopt and adapt’ is one of ITIL’s most rewarding elements. As long as you understand the risks you’re taking, you can make the change you want.
5 Prescriptive ITIL can be adopted as and where appropriate, regardless of industry or sector (see Fact 1. for more information.)
