The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has published a 12-step guide to help organisations prepare for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The Regulation will be enforced from 25 May 2018 and will apply to any organisation – whether they are based in Europe or outside European boundaries – that processes personally identifiable information (PII) of EU residents.
Where to begin: raise awareness
The new Regulation extends the 1995 Data Protection Directive’s (DPD) requirements significantly by introducing a range of new obligations to support those core rules. Step 1 of the ICO checklist is to make sure that decision-makers and employees in your organisation are aware of the changes and the impact they will have on the organisation and daily routines.
How to raise awareness
E-learning courses are the cost-effective and time-saving solution to raise awareness and educate employees whose job involves processing and storing personal data. Delivered online, all your staff need is a computer with an Internet connection. They can access the courses anytime from anywhere, minimising the time spent elsewhere (like travelling to and from the training location) and the impact on their schedules. The courses are easy to understand, and include questions and trivia as methods of teaching. Furthermore, a final assessment demonstrates the learner’s comprehension of the topic.
